Bristlecone pine trees are the very oldest living things in the world. This was discovered back in 1957 when the late Dr. Edmund
Schulman, Professor of Tree-Ring Research for the University of Arizona, found several ancient live bristlecone pine trees. He found these trees living high up in the White Mountains of Inyo National Forest in a dry region of east-central California. He found three trees to be 4,500 years old. He found one tree to be more than 4,600 years old. These trees grow twisted and gnarled and are more like living driftwood on cliffs. The trees grow to be only ten to thirty feet tall with thick trunks. The very oldest living bristlecone growing in Colorado can be found in the Pike National Forest. It was founded by Craig Brunstein, a U.S. Geological Survey geologist. He has dated the tree to be 2,435 years old, 400 years before Christ was born. The rocky slopes protect the trees from forest fires, insects, and other natural predators. The bristlecone pine wood that is used to make furniture and other art goods has been dead for some time. The dead wood takes several centuries to decay. Great pains are taken not to harm even the smallest living tree while taking out chosen pieces. Not every dead piece of wood is picked up, but only those pieces that will work. This leaves the land and area still looking as nature intended it to be, untouched and picturesque.
